Baked Ziti with Italian Sausage

Parent noteThe cheesy layers and pasta make this a guaranteed kid favorite. Mild sausage works best for younger palates.

Ingredients

  • Ziti Pasta16 oz
  • Mild Italian Sausage, casings removed1 lb
  • Marinara Sauce24 oz
  • Ricotta Cheese15 oz
  • Mozzarella Cheese, shredded2 cups
  • Parmesan Cheese, grated1/2 cup
  • Egg1 large
  • Red Pepper Flakes (optional)1/4 tsp

Method

  1. 01

Preheat oven to 375°F. Cook ziti in salted boiling water until just barely al dente (it will finish cooking in the oven). Drain.

  2. 02

In a large skillet, brown Italian sausage over medium-high heat, breaking into crumbles, about 6 minutes. Drain excess fat.

  3. 03

Add marinara sauce to the sausage. Simmer 5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of red pepper flakes.

  4. 04

In a bowl, mix ricotta with half the mozzarella, the egg, and a pinch of salt.

  5. 05

Combine drained ziti with meat sauce. Spread half in a greased 9x13 dish. Dollop ricotta mixture on top. Add remaining ziti and sauce. Top with remaining mozzarella and parmesan.

  6. 06

Cover with foil and bake 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake 10 more minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden. Rest 5 minutes before serving.
