Classic Backyard Burgers

80/20 ground beef formed into half-pound patties, seasoned simply, and grilled over high heat until juicy with a proper crust. This is not a fancy burger. It's the burger every family makes in summer, done correctly. Salt generously, don't press the patty, and don't open the lid for the first 3 minutes.

Parent noteEvery kid eats a burger. The build-your-own serving approach eliminates complaints about toppings. Offer simple options: cheese, ketchup, and pickles for younger kids. Internal temp should reach 160°F. Contains gluten from buns.

Ingredients

  • Ground Beef (80/20)2 lbs
  • Hamburger Buns4
  • American or Cheddar Cheese Slices (optional)4 slices
  • Kosher Salt1 1/2 tsp
  • Coarsely Ground Black Pepper1/2 tsp
  • Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Ketchup, Mustard (your choice) (optional)1 assorted

Method

  1. 01

Preheat grill to high heat (450-500°F). Clean and oil the grates.

  2. 02

Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions. Shape gently into 3/4-inch thick patties. Press a small indentation in the center of each with your thumb to prevent doming.

  3. 03

Season both sides generously with salt and pepper just before grilling.

  4. 04

Grill patties 3-4 minutes per side without pressing down. For cheeseburgers, add cheese in the last minute of cooking.

  5. 05

Toast buns on the grill, cut-side down, 1 minute.

  6. 06

Rest patties 2 minutes before serving. Set out condiments and let everyone build their own.
